The apartment was small but the problems were specific. One bathroom shared between two bedrooms. A spiral staircase so tight and steep it was more obstacle than passage. A kitchen with no space for a table. A space that didn't get enough light.
Each solution had to earn its place. The single bathroom was reconfigured into two ensuites — one per bedroom — which took considerable work to get the plumbing and proportions right in a compressed footprint. The staircase was widened and rebuilt in a conventional configuration, integrated with a TV unit so that one structural change solved two problems at once. The kitchen gained a peninsula, making it work as a dining space without adding any floor area. Finishes and lighting were updated throughout to open the space up.
A small space asks every decision to justify itself.
